How to play 2048

  1. Slide the whole board up, down, left or right. All tiles move as far as they can in that direction.
  2. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with double the value.
  3. After every move a new 2 or 4 appears in an empty cell.
  4. Reach the 2048 tile to win — then keep going for a higher score. The game ends when no move is possible.

About 2048

2048 is a sliding tile puzzle created by the developer Gabriele Cirulli in 2014. It was inspired by earlier games such as 1024 and Threes, and it spread quickly because the rules fit in a sentence: slide the tiles, merge matching numbers, and try to make 2048.

Each move slides every tile as far as it can go in the chosen direction. Two tiles with the same value that collide merge into one tile with double the value, and your score increases by the value of the new tile. After every move a new 2 appears, or occasionally a 4, in a random empty cell. The game ends when the board is full and no merges are possible. Reaching 2048 counts as a win, but you can keep playing for a bigger score.

The game rewards planning over speed. The usual approach is to keep your largest tile in a corner and build a descending chain of values along one edge so that merges cascade. That is why many strong players rely on only three of the four directions. On desktop you can use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D, and on a phone you swipe on the board. Your best score is saved in your browser, so each attempt is a chance to beat your own record.

Tips and strategies

  • Keep your biggest tile in one corner and never move it out unless you have no choice.
  • Stick to two or three directions (for example left, down, right) and use the fourth only in an emergency.
  • Build a snake-like chain of descending numbers along one edge so merges cascade.
  • Avoid scattering small tiles across the board; merge them early before they block bigger moves.

2048 FAQ

What happens when I reach 2048?

You win, and you can keep playing. Tiles above 2048 keep adding to your score.

How is the score calculated?

Each merge adds the value of the new tile to your score, so merging bigger tiles scores much more.

Can I undo a move?

There is no undo, which is part of the challenge. Use the Restart button to start a new game at any time.
