About Color Echo

Color Echo is a pattern memory game based on the idea behind Simon, the electronic game released by Milton Bradley in 1978. Four coloured pads light up in a sequence, and you must repeat it from memory.

Every correct round adds one more step to the pattern, and the playback speeds up as the sequence grows. Each pad has its own musical tone, so you can learn the sequence by sound as well as by colour. Browsers only allow audio after you interact with the page, so sound starts once you tap. There is no time limit while you repeat the pattern, so you can pause to think. One wrong pad ends the run, and your score is the number of rounds you completed.

Short-term memory is limited, and many people top out at around seven items before they need a strategy such as grouping the sequence into chunks of three or four, or saying the colours under their breath. You can tap the pads or press the keys 1 to 4 on a keyboard. Your best round count is stored in your browser. It is a useful warm-up for concentration, and the tones can help anyone who finds colours alone hard to track.

Tips and strategies

  • Say the colours quietly to yourself — 'green, red, red, blue' — verbal rehearsal makes patterns stick.
  • Chunk the sequence into groups of three or four steps instead of memorising a long line.
  • Turn the sound on: each pad has its own tone, which gives your brain a second memory cue.
  • Stay relaxed and take your time on your turn; there is no timer while you repeat the pattern.

Color Echo FAQ

How is the score calculated?

Your score is the number of full rounds you repeated correctly before making a mistake.
